Actually, the full title is "The Little Book of Curses and Maledictions for Everyday Use," but that was a little long to fit into a post title. I found this awesome little book at Books a Million, of all places, and immediately knew that I had to get it for my best friend's 40th birthday, which my coven celebrated last night. The book is adorable, and I highly recommend it! Yes...I did just call a book about curses adorable.
The publisher categorizes this book as a humorous gift, but in actuality Dawn Rae Downton's little gem here does have good information in it. It discusses various categories of curses, circumstances you might want to use them in, and even the ethical implications of cursing. The information is pretty basic, but what grabbed me about this book wasn't so much that it was chocked full of groundbreaking material, but that it existed at all, in a mainstream bookstore, available to the masses. It's not a scary, freak-you-out book on the black arts that was tucked away on the new age shelf with the small selection of books on Satanism. It is a light-hearted, earnest, practical look at curses that was proudly displayed on an end-cap! Yes, most people would chalk it up to a good laugh, but in flipping through the pages, the reader actually does find the groundwork for how to cast effective curses. I love it! When I can justify spending the money on another copy, it will be mine, but for the time being I was thrilled to be able to give it to my friend, and it did make her quite happy. Whether it's for novelty or practical use, I would recommend it to any walker between the dark and the light!
